The Ones Who Learn What "Pura Vida" Really Means — Arenal, Costa Rica

Everyone learns "pura vida" before they land. Fewer people learn what it actually means.

The phrase came from an old Mexican film, of all places — a 1956 movie where the main character kept saying it no matter what went wrong. Ticos heard it, loved the spirit behind it, and made it their own. By now it's not really a phrase anymore. It's a whole way of moving through the day: unhurried, grateful, present. It means hello, thank you, no worries, life is good — whichever one the moment calls for.

Most visitors say it like a souvenir. You're the kind who actually caught what it meant.

Maybe it was the guide who stopped mid-hike to point out a tiny orchid growing out of moss you'd have walked right past. Maybe it was the family who waved you over to share their lunch on the side of the road near Fortuna, no reason for the invitation except that's just how it's done here. You noticed. You stayed a little longer than you had to. You asked questions instead of just taking the photo.

That's the ladybug's whole personality, if you think about it — small, easy to miss, but if you actually look, she's more detailed than almost anything else in the forest. I made her in 950 silver with that same idea: not the loudest piece in the case, but the one that rewards a closer look.

Arenal gave you the postcard — the volcano rising clear above the canopy, mist pulling back just long enough to see the whole thing. But what you actually took home was smaller than that. A phrase you now say without thinking. A few minutes with strangers who treated you like a neighbor instead of a tourist. Pura vida, actually understood.
